Artist statement
I prefer nature to any other setting for my sculpture. Creating shapes that stand out against the sky dates back to my iron worker days. As a building is erected, one cannot see the true shape from the ground, but as the building progresses and it starts to surpass the smaller buildings around it is when the shape begins to have form within the open space that surrounds it.
I feel a great responsibility when creating a piece to be placed outdoors. A sculpture should complement nature. One must achieve balance, to view nature through nature's eyes.
When I look at a piece of stone or metal, I don't see what it is. I see what it will become. The material tells my mind what I am to do. The vision and the material are never separate. The material should never restrict one's vision. It should be a perfect marriage from the beginning.
I hope my sculpture, at first sight, has some obscurity. It should never tell all about itself immediately. To create work that allows the viewer to touch it with their mind, and in doing so understand its form and its movement, is what I try to capture in my life work as a sculptor.
Staying true to the material in my work is important to me. I want to tear down the wall between my mind and my hands, so that the vision is perfectly clear. I want to bring people into my world - a world of space, form, and movement.
