Artist statement
In reviewing over twenty five years of involvement with the incredibly versatile medium of clay, I often feel that I have barely developed the techniques that I have invented for my work, and that I have only partially explored the many ideas that have held my interest throughout those years. Working through the many possibilities of clay has led to this variety of images that all have a commonality of style and which in general address issues of how to make simple forms that transcend the ordinary and hold our attention without leaving behind traditional values of craft art, such as qualities of “handmade-ness ” and craftsmanship. The works in this selection reveal themes inspired by the best art teacher, Mother Nature, and additionally take their lead from the great abstract artists, such as Klee and Kandinsky. They deal with questions of what aesthetic experiences keep us interested and engaged while at the same time bring us joy. These works achieve these goals for me, and I hope they do for the viewer as well.
