Artist statement

Intimate space and bamboo paintings, they are united in these works. Deep within the bamboo stand while drawing and photographing, I became increasingly intrigued by the various shapes, colors and light patterns I saw. The bamboo paintings are the result of this experience.

In the studio, I create paintings by applying many thin layers of oil paint and glaze medium using canvas or panels as the support. I gain the reference materials and the knowledge of subject necessary to create paintings, by the experiences of drawing and photographing.

Because a bamboo forest is dark and thick, it has a closed, intimate feeling. By approaching bamboo with shadowy, in close, personal views, I intend the viewer to also experience the intimacy and knowledge of this quiet place.

I feel a spiritual connection to nature and so I study landscape and natural objects for my artistic inspiration. By attempting to make sense of nature, I am attempting to gain knowledge of life.
