Artist statement

I am drawn to art which speaks to the viewer's humanity, conveying a sense of experiential awareness. It may also evoke an emotional response. I am particularly interested in moods of curiosity, contemplation and serenity.

I tend toward realism, which I understand to involve the undoing of selected visual processing steps normally done unconsciously by an observer. A realist painting speaks niether directly to the eye (as photographs do) nor to the intellect (as symbols do), but instead to subconscious layers of visual experience somewhere in between. By doing this a painting can create a sense of experience, and thereby address nonvisual aspects of the mind including emotion and memory.
