Metro Arts Alert
Formerly Nashville Arts Alert!
TO: Nashville Arts Organizations,
1 October 2006
From the Executive Director
Celebrate Nashville is now in full swing. The Public Square was dedicated on
Sunday, October 1, and the dedication was the kick-off event for
Nashville’s Bicentennial. It is a nine-month celebration ending on July
4, 2007. The Metro Arts Commission has approved the artists to install public
art at the Square. Ken Rowe from Nashville was selected to create a series of
three sculptures entitled “The Spark of Discovery”, “The
Scholar”, and “To the Moon.” Each will include many details
about Nashville and will “spark” the viewer to discover as many
details as possible. Thomas Sayre of Raleigh, North Carolina, will create two
distinctive yet complementary environments around the east and west courtyard
seating areas. The east area will include kinetic sculptures indicative of the
cranes along the working river and the progressive development of downtown
Nashville. At the base of the cranes will be rounded terrazzo sculptures that
can be sat on or climbed upon. The west area will include rectangular
sculptures with fog machines that will emit colored fog to remind one of the
mist that forms on the river from dusk to dawn. These art installations will
be completed during the summer of 2007. We are very excited about the Public
Square, public art, Celebrate Nashville, Celebration of Cultures – all
things which bring people together to enjoy and experience Nashville.
